About this Item
Fine in Fine DJ. Signed by Checkoway on the title page. In addition, a remarkable inscription to Salman Rushdie on the half-title page. Rushdie (though lifted, he still lived under the threat of the fatwa) was in Houston on September 10, 2001 to speak at the University of Houston's annual writer's series. Checkoway was the director of creative writing at the university and was Rushdie's host. After the 9/11 attacks Rushdie was "trapped" in Houston for a week, unable to safely return home. The inscription, obviously before the tragic events took place, is warm, happy, heartfelt and ironic: "To Salman, with gratitude and warmth. Thank you for making my start in Houston such a wonderful one. Julie Checkoway.". Seller Inventory # 000075
