"A young Swedish pathologist named Arvid Lindau had attracted Cushing's attention in 1927 through his description of an important new disease entity, designated 'hemangiomatosis', which Cushing appropriately christened 'Lindau's disease'--a familial condition characterized by tumors of the blood vessels in the retina and also in the central nervous system, sometimes accompanied by cystic degeneration of various internal organs such as the pancreas and the kidney. Blood-vessel tumors of the retina had been described by the Viennese ophthalmologist, von Hippel, but he had not appreciated that the retinal hemangioma was likely to indicate the existence of similar tumors elsewhere in the central nervous system, especially in the cerebellum. A case of Lindau's disease appeared in Cushing's clinic in 1927, and he and Bailey published a detailed report concerning it the following year [offered here]" (Fulton, Harvey Cushing, p. 579).
