This is the first Heritage Press printing with the "Heritage Club Sandglass" paper insert #7D. This copy is signed by Thomas Hart Benton just below his name on the title page--no inscriptions. From an auction of Homer and William Goldstone. A very good copy with moderate fading to the spine and moderate edgewear to the bottom of the spine--otherwise a clean and unmarked copy. Two volumes; quartos; originalrawhide over grass cloth with inlaid illustrations to front and rear; edges stained light yellow; lithographic endpapers; housed in publisher's slipcase; color illus. throughout. Publisher's newsletter The Inside Storylaid in; two copies of publisher's "About the Binding of this book" sheet also laid in. Boards show a touch of edgewear with mild rubbing and white discoloration to spine. Slipcase remarkablywell preserved with just some wear and exposure to open edge, else sturdy and structurally sound. A Very Good or better set of a handsome and scarce production. Various sizes, in the original frames; about 17 x 12 inches to 18 x 16 inches overall. Some nicks and use to the frames; one coin-sized tidemark and some extremely light foxing to the portrait of Ma Joad; portraits otherwise fine. From the estate of Elizabeth Ainsworth, the author's sister. These portraits were issued separately in collection with the 1940 release of the Limited Edition Club's edition of the novel illustrated by Benton. They were presented to Steinbeck by the artist at that time, and remained in Steinbeck's possession for the rest of his life. Seller Inventory # 69902
