nFINE/VG. Large paperback (en Française ; in French). with original cover/jacket. Special Ltd numbered edition - Exemplaire XIII of L (13 of 50) - produced in Nancy, France, on Arches paper, 7 plated/tissued illustrations by Nicholas Sternberg. This very rare copy is SIGNED by one of the adapters/translators - VIRGINIA VERNON - who adapted the play into French. SIGNED boldly on the half title page - a gift copy to a friend. The play was very popular in France, produced into the 1950's, a story of war, courage, endurance and survival. The book is gum-bound and wholly untrimmed - as originally printed, bound. Opposite the frontis lithograph is printed: "Il a ete tire de cet ouvrage, avant l'impression de 'edition ordinaire, 200 exemplaires numerotes de 1 a 200 sur velin pur fil lafuma, constituant l'edition originale. En outre, 30 exemplaires sur ce meme papier ont ete tires avec la marque "Hors Commerce". D'autre part il a ete tire, apres reimposition sur format in-4 telliere, 50 exemplaires sur verge a la cuve des manufactures d'arches numerotes a la presse de I a L. Pour ces volumes, les illustrations de Sternberg ont fait l'object d'un tirage special sur chine, enlithographie, deux teintes. Un dessin nouveau du meme artiste a ete ajoute. Exemplaire No XIII" -- "It has been drawn from this work, before printing of regular edition, 200 copies numbered from 1 to 200 on pure vellum over lafuma, constituting the original edition. In addition, 30 copies on the same paper were drawn with the mark "Hors Commerce". It has also been done after reimposition a 4th format in 'foolscap'. 50 copies on Verge paper by D'Arches numbered I to L (roman numerals). To these volumes, illustrations by Sternberg were added as a special edition en-chine, in lithography, two shades. A new design of the same artist was added. (This is) Copy No. XIII (13)". (of L/50) This volume has the 7 tissue protected lithographs by Sternberg (dated 1929). A printer's note at the rear indicates printing done 15 January 1930 at Nancy. Play was first performed at the Apollo Theatre in London, December 1928. It takes place in Saint-Quentin France, 1918 at the end of World War I, March 18-21. The play's theme is survival, death and endurance under war's besieging adversity. It deals with officers, enlisted soldiers, conficting values, duty and relationships.
