MURAYAMA, Tamotsu. COUNT TADASU HAYASHI: GREAT JAPANESE MASON. [Assumed to be printed in Tokyo]: Sponsored By The Kanto Lodge No. 143 (PI), no publication date but circa 1958. 8vo., turqouise printed wraps, stamped in black; 57 pages with 12 pages also in Japanese, which we have not translated. First Edition. Hayashi, a Japanese Masonic Grand Master, was among the first group of students ever sent by Japan to be schooled in England in the latter 19th century. Hayaski returned from England on the eve of the abolition of the Shogunate and sailed with Enomoto to Yezo. After being subsequently thrown in prison, he later became a diplomat (of course) and had a fairly illustrious career. He was initiated to Empire Masonic Lodge 2108 in 1903 and later became Grand Master. He was also honored Senior Grand Warden of the United Kingdom in England in 1905. Signed presentation from Murayama on the front endpaper: "To Gen. L.L. Lemnitzer, great and understanding Mason- Tamotsu Murayama 12/19/58, Tokyo." With an autograph note signed on Office of the Adjutant General stationery from Herbert L. Nelson presenting the general with this copy. Also with Murayama's Tokyo address on a 3x5 card and a typed schedule for the general, dated Sat, Feb. 28, 1959. Gen. Lyman Louis Lemnitzer (1899-1988) was an extremely influential Army officer and served as JFK's Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the controversial Bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba. He lated became the Supreme Allied Commander of NATO from 1963-1969. Earlier in his career he was on Gen. Eisenhowers's staff during World War II and reportedly helped negotiate the surrender of both Italy and Germany. He was later accused of helping some Nazis escape investigation for war crimes. He is a character in Oliver Stone's 1991 movie "JFK" and was really quite an interesting person- right out of the movies!! And, apparently, a Mason. I have been unable to locate any other copy of this title and would have to say that it is rare, especially with such a terrific presentation. Near fine condition- a great copy! $1500.00.
