This book consists of XXII chapters, Appendices on the following topics: Animal Magnetism in 1850, Kabalistic Alchemy, Recent editions of the suggestive inquiry, the mutus liber and janitor pansophus; and an index. A hypothesis has been current for several generations among students for Hermetic subjects that the literature of Alchemy, though it appears on the surface to be concerned with the transmutation of metals and the discovery of an elixir of life, is in reality a record of spiritual investigations veiled underneath these symbols. In this book the author has undertaken to review the long succession of texts from the beginning at Byzantium to determine the warrants, if any, of this interpretation. He has ascertained, also the circumstances under which it first arose at the end of the sixteenth century. The true nature of the alchemical tradition is unfolded, not only in the light of its literature but in which is derived from the lives of the chief alchemists. Seller Inventory # 036942
