A hypothesis has been current for several generations among students for Hermetic subjects that the literature of Alchemy, though it appears on the surface to be concerned with the transmutation of metals and the discovery of an elixir of life, is in reality a record of spiritual investigations veiled underneath these symbols. In this book the author has undertaken to review the long succession of texts from the beginning at Byzantium to determine the warrants, if any, of this interpretation. He has ascertained, also the circumstances under which it first arose at the end of the sixteenth century.
