Numerous pagination mis-numberings as per ESTC. Text not continuous between p523-626 in accord with ESTC note. A very nice, solid and clean copy of this 1st Edition. Minor marks, blemishes or reading wear commensurate with age else a very nice copy. A handful of leaves with upper marginal small paper repairs. Occasional light water marking else a very nice clean copy in the main. John Jewel, alumnus of Merton College and fellow of Corpus Christi, Oxford, following a turbulent period in Mary I s reign including exile to Frankfurt, returned to England on Elizabeth I s succession and rapidly rose, as Bishop of Salisbury, to the position of prime defender of the Church of England in opposition to the Roman Catholic Church, his arguments crystallized in Apologia Ecclesiae Anglicanae, published in 1562. Two years later, Thomas Harding, an Oxford contemporary, with an axe to grind, since Jewel had deprived him of a position in Salisbury Cathedral due to his recusancy, published a response, his detailed, antagonistic Answer (see) to which Jewel responded with this work. A Replie. Harding followed with a Confutation, a year later, and Jewel with a Defence of the Apology in 1567. The arguments raged across the spectrum of the division between the churches, with particular emphasis, as ever, on transubstantiation. This edition was laid out in the traditional refutation style with contentious passages and their rebuttals printed side by side, the less common, more foreign typography (Roman & Italic as opposed to black letter) generally used for Harding s Catholic text. While Jewel s Replie was considered by the state to be so convincing that the Archbishop of Canterbury ordered a copy to be placed in every parish in England (as opposed to the suppressed Catholic response), the nature of the refutation style meant that Harding s text was also free to view by all parishioners.
