Through examination of the correspondence preserved in the papal registers, classic topics like the dispute between papacy and empire can be interpreted within a broader context while case studies ranging from the British Isles to the Mediterranean reveal the mechanisms and actors of papal politics in late medieval Europe.

About the Author:
Sebastian Zanke, Dr. phil (Universität Augsburg, 2012), hat nach Forschungsaufenthalten in Rom und London an den Universitäten Augsburg und Erlangen-Nürnberg gelehrt und ist derzeit Lehrbeauftragter für Mittelalterliche Geschichte an der LMU München. Seine Forschungen thematisieren die soziale und politische Geschichte Europas im Hoch- und Spätmittelalter, wobei ein besonderer Fokus auf den Britischen Inseln sowie der Papst- und Kirchengeschichte liegt.
Sebastian Zanke, Ph.D. (2012) in Medieval History, Augsburg University, has been teaching Medieval History at the Universities of Augsburg, Erlangen-Nuremberg and Munich. His research interests focus on the political and social history of Europe, with special reference to the papacy and the British Isles.
