Review:
'The great authority and worldwide prestige of the Art Directors Club Annual Awards remain unequaled. But let me dispense with the nonsense, usually offered by untalented creative directors at uncreative ad agencies, that the pursuit of winning awards, voted on by our peers, is a false quest. The awards show may be the selfaggrandizement of our craft, but who in the film industry doesn't covet an Oscar? I've always had the chutzpah to believe that every job that came off my drafting table deserved to be a Gold Cube winner in the upcoming ADC Annual, and I hoped to win several each year. So did Paul Rand, Lou Dorfsman, Herb Lubalin, Bill Golden, Bob Gage, Bill Bernbach, Mary Wells, et al. We were all damn proud of winning in the Art Directors Club Annual Awards, and we knew the clients we were creating successful advertising for, were even more thrilled knowing their advertising was recognized as being superior. Most important to the creatives in the ad business is that winning an Art Directors Club Cube is, dramatically, careerbuilding. Each year's Annual forever commemorates the most creative work of the year. Long may the show, and the Annual, live.' --George Lois, art director, designer and author.
