Chelsea grew up as a riverside village, its old church near to the homes of Thomas More and Henry VIII. Wren's Royal Hospital added an architectural gem. Once the 'King's Road' became public, development began in earnest south and north of that long thoroughfare. The Chelsea of Edwardian London was famous for its artistic icons (Leighton, Whistler and Rossetti among them) and entertainment-loving chic: indeed, it is still renowned for the latter. In the 1960's, it became the centre of a re-born trendy London, famous worldwide for its hip fashion.
