Cairo is unique, in that it is the only city in the world which has a series of Islamic monuments running unbroken from the 9th to the 20th century. This two-volume set, is an authentic reproduction of books first published in 1949 by the Survey of Egypt. As an historical record it illustrates the principle masterpieces in chronological order and has been updated to include three new mosques built since 1949.

A short introduction is written in this edition by Dr. Kamal Ismail, one of the experts who worked with Creswell during the preparation of this work. This survey covers 65 mosques and other Islamic monuments of Egypt, arranged chronologically from 641 to 1946, with a final section on ornamental details, such as woodwork, window-grilles, and marble floors. A highly important academic study especially after a considerable number of mosques were either destroyed or badly damaged in the earthquake of 1955. It is a key record of both what does and does not survive today. #18640. Seller Inventory # 014572
