Synopsis:
William Wilde was a noted antiquarian in his day, and he realized the vast wealth of Irish history in this region where castles, forts, abbeys, tumuli and round towers are strategically positioned. Wilde explored all of these extensively, realized their significance and preserved them for posterity with beautiful woodcut engravings. The Boyne basin area is strewn with an extraordinary amount of ancient monuments. Tara, in pre-Christian times was the home of the Irish High Kings and their burial grounds are spread out over the area. It was here too that St Patrick commenced his introduction to christianity in Ireland. The author also gives a graphic unbiased account of the Battle of the Boyne (1690) and includes a map of the battlefield showing the relative positions of the opposing armies.
