The 18th of December 1891 was an important day in the history of the Wanganui River, for it was on that day that A.Hatrick &Co.'s fine new paddle steamer Wairere cast off from Bett's Wharf at Wanganui and commenced her maiden voyage up the Wanganui River to Pipiriki, deep in the interior of the North Island. Few could have known it then, but the river steamer service was to burgeon forth into a giant tourist industry employing many people; to make the hitherto unknown Wanganui River into one of New Zealand's major tourist attractions, and to open up the dense bush of the back blocks for settlement.
