Book Description Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. An entertaining, intelligent and observant book featuring male and female effigies from Suffolk churches, with 50 pages of illustrations from the author's own expert brass rubbings, and a lot of human as well as heraldic detail. In its time, a pioneering book. Effigies include those of John Daye (who printed the first church music book in English, and Foxe's Book of Martyrs, and was the first English printer to abandon Gothic-style black-letter type), Elizabeth Brand (whose 12 children - says her memorial - were 'all nursed with her unborrowed milk'), and Radclif Wingfield (who's pictured wearing a low-cut bodice and elaborately embroidered undergarment). Felgate writes well about the thrills the brass-rubber obtains when, for example, an "attractive little dog makes its presence known", or details "gradually appear through the paper" and the reader may experience similar pleasures in looking through the pages of this book. It has some creasing down the spine but is still well-bound. The thick glossy card covers are slightly worn at the corners and along the edges. There's a previous owner's name and address in pencil on the title page, which is neatly-clipped in the bottom right-hand corner, probably to remove the price. The same previous owner - to judge by the handwriting - has written two pages of detailed notes at the back of the book, on subjects such as mullets and moustaches. Some striking moustaches do appear in this volume. There's no other markings to the text. A few pages leading up to page 136 are lightly bumped or mildly dog-eared. Editorial matter includes Introductory Notes (with walk-on parts for US Air Force wives stationed in Suffolk), List of Heraldic Terms and Index to Family Arms. A huge amount of research clearly went into this book, and it is difficult to imagine a more knowledgeable guide to such Suffolk rarities as the codpiece on Francis Clopton illustrated in Plate 39. At a time of renewed interest in country church monuments, this book is recommended. We also have T. M. Felgate's earlier book Knights on Suffolk Brasses. Please ask if you would like to know more.
