Book Description Condition: Gut. LXI, 724 Seiten / p. altersgemäß guter bis sehr guter Zustand / very good condition for age - Preface -- By common agreement among Dante scholars, the Guido da Pisa Commentary on the Inferno is the single most important commentary which remained unedited, except for minor portions. Its importance derives from the fact that it was written within a few years of Dante s death by a man who was steeped in the theological, philosophical, and literary background of the period which produced the Commedia and had the ability to appreciate the greatness of its poetry. As we shall indicate later in the history of this project, the existence of this Commentary first became known through a note of Francesco da Buti in his own commentary. Ever since then scholars have expressed their longing for an edition. Among the most prominent voices were Witte, Moore, Roediger, Luiso, Rocca, Vandelli, Rostagno, Barbi, and all others who had occasion to consider the earliest commentaries. The magnitude of the project has hindered its completion; but after many vicissitudes the Commentary is now presented in its entirety. -- Practically nothing is known of the life of the author Guido da Pisa, or Guido Pisanus. Da Buti speaks of him as belonging to the Carmelite Order. Mehus, in his life of Ambrosius Travesarius, likewise mentions him as a member of the Carmelite Order. To the best of our knowledge, he was born in Pisa in the second half of th| thirteenth century and lived into the fourth decade of the fourteenth century. Before it was definitely known that he had written a commentary on the Inferno, Guido was already known for his literary work La Fiorita (also known as Fiore d' Italia) and especially for the second part of this work published separately as I Fatti d'Enea.
