Most guidebooks on tracks and sign use sketches. Not this one. It was one of the first to use photographs of actual tracks and sign to give readers a more accurate view of what wildlife tracks and sign look like in the wild. I took most of the photos in the book, so I've spent plenty of time studying tracks and sign.

This book also has photographs of the animals and birds discussed in the text, so readers see the critters as well as the sign they leave. The beauty of learning how to accurately interpret tracks and sign is being able to learn about the whereabouts and habits of various creatures without actually seeing them. The better people become at reading tracks and sign, the better their chances of seeing the animals that left the sign they encounter most frequently.

There are chapters about sign left by birds, reptiles, amphibians and misc. critters besides mammals. There are also chapters on aging tracks and how to take your own photographs of tracks and sign.

Richard P. Smith is an award-winning outdoor writer and photographer living in Marquette, Michigan, who has hunted deer for over 40 years. His writing and photography regularly appear in magazines such as Deer and Deer Hunting and North American Whitetail. He is the author of numerous books on hunting.
