I like to think of Found Meals of the Lost Generation as a kind of edible time machine, or as social history with recipes. It combines one of my favorite interests (the 1920s American expat scene in Paris) with another (cooking). Each chapter devotes itself to a major literary or artistic figure of that day, finishing with a quotation describing an actual meal in which the artist or writer took part. With a bit of imagination you'll soon be sharing steak-frites with Hemingway on the Ile St. Louis, attending tea in Gertrude Stein's living room, or eating lobster back- stage at the Folies with Josephine Baker. There are a few relatively obscure but quite delightful people in these pages, too--Jimmie the Barman is one of them. Jimmie ran the most popular bars among the expats, places with names like the Dingo, the Jockey, and at least a dozen others. Among his clientele and friends:Hemingway, Sylvia Beach, Isadora Duncan, Man Ray, and James Joyce. A former flyweight boxer from Liverpool, Jimmie served as his own bouncer, and he was tough enough to earn the respect of an old-fashioned bully-boy like Hemingway. Customers demanded aphrodisiac drinks from Jimmie so often that he finally invented one, calling it the Jimmie Special. To make enough for two, combine in a cocktail shaker: 1 jigger cognac, 1/2 jigger Pernod, 1/2 jigger Amer-Picon, 1/2 jigger Mandarin, 1/2 jigger sweet cherry brandy (kirsch). Shake thoroughly. Drink straight or with soda. Ernest Hemingway was right, by the way: Paris *is* a moveable feast. Have fun with Found Meals--and bon appetit!
