He soon earned a positive reputation for his photographs of the Civil War, depicting the harsh realities of that conflict. In 1867, he became the official photographer for Clarence King's geological survey and headed west. Four years later, he joined the Wheeler Survey, documenting the land and its native inhabitants while also taking photos that could be used to attract settlers to the American West. In 1873, O'Sullivan led an independent expedition for Wheeler, which included visiting the Zuni Pueblo. He became one of the first photographers to record the pueblo villages of the Southwest and is remembered for his realistic and respectful portrayals of Native Americans. Seller Inventory # 024013
