Astronaut Charles M. Duke Jr., lunar module pilot of the Apollo 16 lunar landing mission, collects lunar samples during lunar surface extravehicular activity at the Descarte landing site. This picture was taken by Astronaut John W. Young, crew commander. The parked Lunar Roving Vehicle is in the left background. Note crater at left center stage. From the first release of Apollo 16 Lunar Surface Extravehicular (EVA) Photography. An original chromogenic 10" x 8" print on Kodak fiber-based paper bearing the "A Kodak Paper" watermark on the verso. From the library of Homer E. Newell, space scientist and NASA executive. Newell joined NASA in 1958, and was successively assistant director for space sciences (1958-1960), deputy director of space flight programs (1960-1961), director of space sciences (1961-1963), associate administrator for space science and applications (1963-1967) and finally to the third ranking position at NASA as associate administrator of NASA (1967-1974).
