An excellent view of the Lunar Module "Orion" and Lunar Roving Vehicle, as photographed by Astronaut Charles M. Duke Jr., lunar module pilot, during the first Apollo 16 extravehicular activity (EVA-1) at the Descartes landing site. Astronaut John W. Young, commander, can be seen directly behind the LRV. The lunar surface feature in the left background is Stone Mountain. While Astronaut Young and Duke descend in the LM to explore the moon, Astronaut Thomas K. Mattingly II, command module pilot, remained with the Command and Service Modules in lunar orbit. From the first release of Apollo 16 Lunar Surface Extravehicular (EVA) Photography. An original chromogenic 10" x 8" print on Kodak fiber-based paper bearing the "A Kodak Paper" watermark on the verso. From the library of Homer E. Newell, space scientist and NASA executive. Newell joined NASA in 1958, and was successively assistant director for space sciences (1958-1960), deputy director of space flight programs (1960-1961), director of space sciences (1961-1963), associate administrator for space science and applications (1963-1967) and finally to the third ranking position at NASA as associate administrator of NASA (1967-1974).
