About this Item
An emotionally charged public health pamphlet on venereal disease in young girls, published by the government for residents of North Dakota following the First World War. Takes a strong moral stance against "prostitution and immorality", and links syphilis to twelve percent of "all the inmates of the State Hospital for Insane" as a means of conveying the seriousness of the issue. Provides ten brief case studies highlighting the moral crisis facing youth in North Dakota. Auto rides, social dances, and a lack of parental oversight appear to be the biggest risk factors according to this pamphlet. Note the image of an innocent girl in a bonnet used for the title page, and the metaphor of "Moloch", an ancient fire god who required child sacrifices. Single vol. (7.5" by 4.25"), pp. 8, illus., stapled in original self wrps. 4 copies on OCLC (July 2023). "Age 17. The girl says she was always taught to be good but at the age of 15 she was forced by a man of about 30 years of age to have sexual relations of which she did not tell her mother . she became diseased, having gonorrhoea" (pp. 5-6). "Age 18. Says that her mother allowed her to accept invitations to go to dances in autos and her escorts were considered reputable young men and in this way she allowed sexual relations . She says she always had good home teaching but the men and her girl friends told her different things" (p. 7). "Age 16. States that traveling men and others often come to the house and she went with them to dances in autos and had sexual relations with some of them; that she has gonorrhoea" (p. 7). Very good. Toned with some rust staining from staples, minor dust soiling. Seller Inventory # 23001235
