About this Item
Authentic handwritten journal with related ephemera of Andrew Harkness. Earliest entries date to mid-1860. Pages show blue numbers in the upper right hand corner starting with page 7 up to page180. Andrew Harkness 1839-1917 is laid to rest in Mount Tremper NY Cemetery where it is written that he had married Mary Margaret Ennist and served his Country in the Civil War fighting with 20 Regt NYSM "Ulster Guard" Company D. Andrew and his wife Mary Margaret had lost an infant daughter Flora on January 1870 in Olive.Based on my quick study of the journal, not sure if Andrew Harkness had a formal store front but it appears he did business with others in Olive. Many of his clients names are known to be common in Olive. In the centerfold of "History of the Town of Olive 1823-1973" by Vera Van Steenbergh Sickler appears a map of Olive as parts of Lot no. 7 & 8 of the Hardenburgh Patent. On that map Andrew Harkness is shown as owning maybe 2 separate buildings on a stream in Great Lot #7.Inner hinges and binding of book is well preserved. A very readable book.
