Small archive from Daniel Hoyt of Brown County, Kansas. ______ Hoyt was born in New Hampshire in 1813 and married Maria Osgood of Penobscot County, Maine in 1837. ______ In 1857 they emigrated to Wisconsin. ______ In 1858 they relocated to Kansas where, with his two sons, he became a successful farmer. ______ Two years later he and the state were in the midst of "Droughty Kansas." ______ This was the historic drought that had a profound effect on the opinion of eastern capital in regards to Kansas. ______ Roughly one third of the Territory's residents would abandon their homesteads and flee east. ______ Mr Hoyt would stay and recover at least some of his prior holdings.______ ____________ 1. Group of five 1848-1849 letters and documents from Hoyt's life in Maine. ____________ 2. April 1858 conveyance of land in Brown County, Kansas Territory to Daniel "Hoit." Single sheet 10 x 9.5", entirely in manuscript. ____ "Know all me by these present that / I, A.R. Pepper of Brown County K.T. / in consideration of the sum of one hundred / dollars to me in hand paid, have bargained sold, and quit claimed, and by these present do bargain sell and quit / claim unto Daniel Hoit of Brown County / K.T. all my right of preemption / to the [section description] / In witness whereof I have hereunto set my / hand and seal this fifteenth day of April / A.D. 1858 // [ A.R. Pepper signature ] "______ Signed by Thos. Chandler as witness and attested by by the local Justice of the Peace ____________ 3. July 1858 receipt for shipment of three crates from St Louis to Doniphan (K.T.) on board the steamboat "Silver Heel".______ The cost is to be 45õ per hundred pounds for 1800 pounds of household goods.______ Single sheet, 10 x 8", typeset on one side with particlars entered in manuscript. ____________ 4. December 1860 plea from the Relief Committee of Brown County, Kansas Territory. Single sheet, 10 x 7.75", entirely in manuscript on both sides. ______ [front]______ "Mr. E.L Pommel (?) / Sir. I have given this / order to Daniel Hoyt and if you feel that he is a deserving of some assistance / you will pleas (sic) enclose this order and / direct to S.C. Pomeroy. And should he succeed in getting anything you well see / that it is properly distributed and take receipt for the same and forward them to me. [signed] H.R. Gorman (?)" ______ [back] " Hiawatha, Brown Co. Dec. 17, A.D. 1860 / Hon. H.C. Pomeroy / Sir you will pleas (sic) let the baror (sic) / have as much corn flour potatoes and clothing / as in your judgement may seem best. To be distributed among the destitute of [ crossed out Lock Claytonville Township / Brown County and oblige us / [signed] H.R. Gorman (?) / Wm. H. Jones / A.O. Selleg / Constbl / relief Committee Brown County K.T." ____________ 5. Foolscap receipt, 3 x 7.5", in manuscript on one side. "Kickapoo Reservation Feb 5th 1862 / recvd for Mr. Dan Hoit for rails on house full up this dade (sic) / John C. Anderson" ____________ 6. Type set receipt, 4.75 x 8.5", with particulars in manuscript. From Englehart & Fairchild, a store in Hiawatha, Kansas and dated January 24, 1863. Mr Hoyt has paid for some calico and merchandise for his daughter. ____________ 7. Another of above, dated Sept. 26, 1863. Miss Elmira Hoyt has purchased unspecified merchandise for $4.95. ____________ 8. Two manuscript letters from C.S. Osgood of Bangor, Maine to Hoyt inquiring about Osgood's sister, presumably Hoyt's wife. ____________ 9. Four page manuscript letter from Maria Danforth in La Grange (Maine) to the Hoyts in Kansas. ______Includes considerable details about Maine relations and neighbors. marriages, deaths, births, relocations etc. ____________All couched in a rather forlorn voice with implications that the Hoyts had departed rather curtly and were not responding to repeated letters. ____________ 10. Three page letter to Mr Hoyt from J.S. McCoy in Fairview (Brown County, Kansas) dated July 30th 1883. ______ It appears that Mr McCoy is in charge of a Bro. Seller Inventory # 33519
