Former ownership marks: 1) embossed stamp at upper corner for Essex Institute; 2) faint stamp next to that reading "Essex Co. Library Duplicate"; 3) next to that stamped "New York State Library." John M. Berry, of Millbury, Mass., sought to convince the Massachusetts legislature to have the state assume ownership of the Boston and Albany Railroad for the benefit of the state's citizens.
