About this Item
This lot consists of seven letters between the British Treasury and Admiralty. Dates from 1867 to 1876; and most addressed to Lord Henry Lennox. Most marked private. Many of the letters are in somewhat condescending bureaucrat-ese. All somewhat age-toned, and with a bit of staining. All have been folded. A summary of the letters is as follows: 1) Dated Nov. 2, 1875; blindstamped "Treasury S. W." ; from William Henry Smith (probably the model for the character Joseph Porter in G&S HMS Pinafore) to Lennox; regrets at not being able to dispense with red tape over requested expenditures & mentions budget issues that may make it difficult to fund public works. 2) Dated Jan 22, 1867; from George Ward Hunt, then Sec'y of the Treasury to John Pakington, then First Lord of the Admiralty; Defers to a request for an increase in salary for the the Master Shipwright at Pembroke (likely Edward James Reed) & seeking further justification. 3) Dated Jan 23, 1867; from Pakington to Hunt; a reply (marked copy) of a likely earlier letter; illustrates hard feelings between the Treasury and the Admiralty, and references a certain 'Mr. Cole' who takes 'a wicked pleasure' in sending rude letters (probably Captain Cowper Phipps Cole of the later HMS Captain debacle. 4) Dated Jan 30, 1867; from Hunt to Lennox; difficult to read, but appears to be a disagreement over a proposal made for clerks salaries. A second section further discusses the Shipwright salary. 5) Dated 2 Oct, 1874; from a Captain Dalton(? ) to Lennox; Hadzor House, Droitwich printed at the top front; a short letter, difficult to read, but something about a 'Stevens' coming into £300, and Lennox letting 'Pegler' know. 6) Dated Jan 28, 1876; 11, Downing Street, Whitehall printed at the top front; from Stafford Northcote (then Chancellor of the Exchequer) to Lennox; concerning decisions on the construction of a new Admiralty near Story's Gate, and a new War Office connected with the old Horse Guards, and questions on the the timing for the acquisition of the property, etc. 7) Dated Jan 21, 1875; Downing Street inked at the top front; from Northcote to Lennox; concerning issues related to the 'Expiry Laws Continuance Act', and how to apply. ; 28A.
