About this Item
ALS from McLean to Lieutenant Tuke ordering troops to protect the Ngaruroro Gorge area, near Patea - "watch the proceedings of any parties of natives passing?" 3 sides of heavy purple paper. Dated Napier 21st Dec 1865. Edmund Tuke (1826-1901) was commissioned into the militia at Napier in 1863 and in 1865 was sent by McLean with 40 men to Ngaruroro to monitor movements of Maori tribes trying to join the HauHau. He was present at the battle at Petane where the HauHau were defeated, and accompanied prisoners to the Chatham islands, spending time there with Te Kooti. Very interesting letter from the heart of the HauHau campaign. 34 x 21 cm. Seller Inventory # 018842
