About this Item
This is a superb map of thew United States on a large scale. Most important is its declaration of the importance of roads over railroads. Issued in 1917. The importance of this map can be found in the route of the Lincoln highway, the most public of trails. The Lincoln Highway Association was founded in 1913 for the purpose of uniting local organizations a long its route into a cohesive road promotion program. They were successful but had problems with the route going through out of the way Denver. Denver was bypassed in favor of Cheyenne. The Lincoln Highway was going the way of the Union Pacific. But mapmakers were in doubt. As you can see on this map, there was a branch into Denver. Usage allowed for the diversion to Denver under alternative routes. This preceded the Federal Route numbering system by 9 years. It ia also interesting to note the highways in place in 1917. Many are named trails not shown on this map. Add atonally many named trails are identified as transcontinental highways in the key. Trunk railroads are also shown with feeder railroads. This map is the culmination of the work of many cartographers who during their time were labeled pathfinders. They went out and marked out the routes, drew the maps and marked the trails. rand Mac Nally agents were also in the field with their Blazed Trail Program. It was a time of hyperactivity that yielded significant advances in mapping roads. It was also characterized by the named trail organizations bring funding to road improvement. It was an era of great leaps forward in the heightened consciousness of Americans for long distance travel by automobile. If you had a car, cash and a tent you could explore the National Park system of the United States. This map also preceded Dwight Eisenhower trip across the U.S. by army convoy. It is said that that three month trip paved the way for the 1956 creation of the interstate highway system. This is a special map of large size created at a momentous time in American automobile history. The verso map is a detailed road map of the New England states. It is highly informative and a bonus in light of the major opus U.S. map. Very good condion with a few tears and separation at the folds expertly repaired with archival mending tape.
