About this Item
Engraving with original hand color, heightened in gold (approx. 19 3/4 X 23 3/8 inches). A celestial diagram illuminating the Ptolemaic theory of epicycles, surrounded by cherubs and other allegorical figures. Epicyclic thoeries account for the discrepancy between the real movements of the planets and the incorrect model that placed the Earth at the center of the solar system. From "Atlas Coelestis seu Harmonia Macrocosmica" the first celestial atlas produced in the Netherlands. Cellarius combined the theories of Ptolemy, Copernicus, and Brahe to produce one of the most lauded and decorative celestial atlases ever created. Seller Inventory # AJS00191
