About this Item
Antique nautical chart of the coast of South Africa. The map has no title. The two most prominently marked locations are 'Baya de Saldanha' (Saldanha Bay) and 'Cabo de Boa Esperanca' (Cape of Good Hope). Scale stick and compass rose at the bottom. Backside blank. Margins left and top narrow, but sufficient for framing. Hand-coloured copper engraving, published in Dordrecht in 1724-1726 by Joannes van Braam and Gerard Onder de Linden in "Oud en nieuw Oost-Indiën, vervattende een naaukeurige en uitvoerige verhandelinge van Nederlands mogentheyd in die gewesten, benevens eene wydluftige beschryvige der Moluccos . en alle de eylanden onder dezelve landbestieringen behoorende; het Nederlands comptoir op Suratte, en de levens der Groote Mogols (.)," François Valentyn.
