About this Item
Two colour maps printed on either side of a card sheet 24 x 42cm, with printed title labels in English and Arabic laid on. Scale approx 1cm to 110km. Fair condition only, with wear along a hard central crease, staining to the top margin of the Eastern Network side, an additional route to Aswan highlighted in pink on the South Eastern Network side, and minor loss to title label. This is undated, but would date between December 1958 and September 1961 with both Egypt and Syria named "U.A.R.". United Arab Airlines (UAA) was formed in December 1958 from a merger of the state airlines of Egypt (Misrair) and Syria (Syrian Airways), as a consequence of the formation of the United Arab Republic in Feb 1958. When Syria left the UAR on 26 Sept 1961, Syrian Airways withdrew from UAA. (UAA retained its name until 1971, when it was renamed EgyptAir, and Egypt dropped the name UAR). Syrian Airways was at this time only a small regional operator, while Misrair, the largest and oldest in the Arab world, operated an extensive network out of Cairo, as shown on the map. The South Eastern Network destinations from Cairo include Luxor, Alexandria, Khartoum, Asmara, Jeddah, Aden, Jerusalem (via a dogleg avoiding Israel), Beirut, Sidon, Damascus, Baghdad, Kuwait, and Tehran. Israel itself is not named, and its borders exclude the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Golan Heights. The Eastern Network map is bounded by the Elburz Mountains (NW), Trucial / Arabian Gulf Coast from Bahrain to Oman (SW), China and India (E). The only route shown on this side is the very last stage of the journey to Tehran, close to the edge. Seller Inventory # 4354
