About this Item

Description:

Original hand-coloured engraved map of Australia with inset maps of Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) and the world on Mercator's projection. Dissected into 24 sections and backed onto linen, folding between marbled-paper covers into publisher's original cloth slipcase with engraved title-label to upper cover and additional manuscript label (charmingly titled "Austraila") to spine. The map shows the gold deposits, the direction of the ocean currents, and a red line traversing the continent represents the overland telegraph route. Old ownership inscription to title-label on slip case with a date of 1879. Some light toning and smudging, faint offsetting from telegraph cable, one small ink spot to verso, generally a very good copy with excellent original hand colouring. First published 1833 and repeatedly updated this example shows the routes explored by Sturt in the 1860's, Forest in 1874, and A. Giles' "Camel Track" of 1875. For this remarkable journey Afghan cameleer Mahomet Saleh, who had accompanied explorer Peter Warburton to Western Australia two years previously, drove and managed the camels.
