A single sheet, 2.75 x 23.5", printed on both sides and gate-folded to four panels._____ The exterior has two title panels and a two panel "Diary"._____  The  latter is a chronological narrative of the four day journey._____ The secondary title panel reads:  "The Santa Fe Route / Kansas City /  To / San Francisco / And Direct To / San Diego / The Capital And Centre Of The Finest Climate / Of The World / Southern Kansas / Colorado / New Mexico / Arizona / Through Cars." _____ We believe this item is the earliest format of this title._____  Both title panels were printed in red and black, then overprinted with a solid rectangle of gold._____  The gold greatly diminished the optics of the words "Great Middle" and "Santa Fe" and heavily mutes the red diagonal banner behind them._____  Subsequent issues would rework the gold printing plate to leave the red banner and white "Great Middle" and "Santa Fe" uncovered._____  This change would make the later issues much more visually striking._____ The entire interior is a simple, color strip map of the route from Kansas City to California._____  Major stops in Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and California are noted,  Those that are meal breaks are flagged._____ Undated, but WorldCat suggests 1891._____ WorldCat shows four holdings (DPL, UtU, NMSU, Yale)._____ The holdings of the first two match this example._____  The other two are physically wider, with the Yale citation describing a fifth panel of Kansas City agents._____  We believe this extra panel constitutes at least a second edition._____.
