Folded map in slipcase. Whilst the slipcase does not have a Cary label (instead it has an 'England' label), the handwriting on the label (with a date 1791) matches the initials on the reverse of the map, so the slipcase is contemporaneous with the map. The map has the date of June 15th 1791 to the edge of the simple plaque. It is in very good condition with minimal wear to the panels and linen, apart from the odd minor spot to the map face and slight discolouring to the reverse. No holes or tears. Marbled paper slipcase slightly rubbed and scuffed but still rigid. The outline colouring to counties is still sharp. The map is unusual for the period, in that the way in which the town names have been engraved, creates a radial effect on the map, with London as the focus. It is also to be noted that the whole of Scotland is represented albeit on a reduced scale. French title above upper margin: Itineraire de la Grand Bretagne. According to Fordham, the map was first issued in 1784, with this being the first stated reprint followed by a later reprint in 1804. Sheet size when open: 46.5cm by 56cm approx.
