About this Item
Antique map of the region in Asia that largely corresponds to present-day India. Title cartouche bottom right. Backside blank. Two icons from cartographic history come together in the map. The map was made by Gerard Mercator (1512-1594), the famous cartographer of the sixteenth century. In 1578 he published an atlas with maps based on the work of Claudius Ptolemy (87-150), the famous geographer of Antiquity. This map is one of the maps from this atlas. In the course of the seventeenth century the old title cartouche was removed and replaced by this cartouche. Small diagonal printers crease to the left of the cartouche. Otherwise excellent. Hand-coloured copper engraving, published in Amsterdam in 1730 by R. and G. Wetstein and W. Smith in "Orbis Antiqvi Tabulae Geographicae secundum Cl. Ptolemyevm, (.)." Dimensions (image): 35 x 46 cm.
