About this Item
Vol. V, No. 1 [whole number 50] (December 1883) to Vol. VIII, No. 3 [whole number 87] (December 1886), comprising 38 issues in all (volume numbering is screwy), bound in three volumes of leather and boards. Quartos. Vol. VI is a contemporary binding. Vols. V and VII new bindings. Contents VG, light general wear, a few stains, several pages wrinkled, one page sprinkled with pen marks. Lacking the first 14 pages of the July 1884 issue (as well as the fashion plate). The March and December 1886 fashion plates also lacking. Of the 35 extant plates, a few are reinforced and one has modest adhesion, the rest fine. George Munro was a towering figure in the history of dime novels. In the 1860s, he initiated his Munro Ten Cent Novels series, and then, upon its success, launched the Fireside Companion (1867) and the Seaside Library (1877). The New York Fashion Bazar was his most ambitious effort yet. Launched in 1879, it lasted into the early 1890s. It was much larger than Godey s and Peterson s and its large fashion plates were chromolithographed, not hand-colored. While it devoted considerable space to fashion cuts and descriptions, it also featured serialized fiction to an extent far surpassing its competitors. The New York Fashion Bazar is a scarce title. Though Worldcat identifies fifteen public holdings, many are just of an issue or two and a few are of just one volume. Only the University of Southern California has multiple volumes.
