Condition; Original hardback binding good, minor sunning, very rare original decorative Paper label to spine stating 200 copies printed, fairly good with wear, also remains of another small very old paper label to base ?Lot 101? from being in an old auction. Contents good, clean copy, the rare odd minor mark, noticed 2 minor edge tears, only noticed one pencil inscription to first endpage ?Limited to 200 copies 1st ed. 1878? printed within half title is 230 woodcuts of which 42 by Bewick. ( just a few hand coloured). First pages of publisher's catalogue rear Uncut (so will have to be careful there). It states some of the Bewick blocks used here had been purchased at the Mr Hugo Sale just the previous year 1877. This Title is a very confusing title for it?s various different 1878 Limited editions, From others listed on abe, seems to be a 300 and 500 limited edition edition and an open edition. Even this copy states inside present work published and guaranteed only 250 copies, 175 on fine and 75 on extra thick paper, each copy numbered, though the spine is printed with 200 copies printed. So even this book is confusing, unable to see the numbered copy page. As this copy has at rear a 12 page publisher's catalogue with printed date ?London 1878? so at least we can state this is a genuine 1878 limited edition copy. Size 23 x 15cm aprox.
