Du Chaillu is best known as an intrepid explorer of Africa. 'In 1871 Du Chaillu, ever restless, sought to explore an area of the world new to him and in stark contrast to equatorial Africa. He went to Scandinavia and began crisscrossing the peninsula from southern Sweden to the northernmost parts of Lapland. For most of the next seven years he observed, recorded, and lived with Scandinavian natives of all sorts, often on most familiar terms. Three years later he published The land of the midnight sun .
