The Second Edition, revised and corrected, with additions. 28,5 x 22,5 cm. XVII S., [1] Bl., 373 Seiten. Mit einigen Textholzschnitten und einer mehrfach gefalteten grenzkolorierten Kupferstich-Karte. Zeitgenössisches Ganzleder mit Rückentitel und reicher Rückenvergoldung, beide Deckel mit reicher Blindprägung, jeweils vier goldgeprägte Ornamente in den Ecken. Steh- und Innenkantenvergoldung, dreiseitiger Goldschnitt. Einband etwas berieben, Ecken bestossen, Rücken hinterlegt. Exlibris entfernt, durchgehend etwas fleckig, die Faltkarte stärker. Titelblatt mit Abklatsch der Karte. Embacher 225. Mungo Park (1771-1806), neben James Bruce wohl der bedeutendste englische Afrika-Reisende des 19. Jahrhunderts, unternahm bereits 1795-97, im Auftrag der 'African Association', eine Expedition zur Festlegung des Niger-Verlaufes. Hier der Bericht seiner zweiten Expedition, die er im Auftrag der Regierung unternahm und auf der er zu Tode kam. "Parks wissenschaftliche Beobachtungen auf dem Gebiet der Botanik und der Meteorologie dieser Region und über das soziale und häusliche Leben der Farbigen sind von bleibendem Wert" (Carter/Muir). Parks "career was short, but he made the first great practical advance in the opening-up of Central Africa" (Printing and the Mind of Man, p. 153).
