About this Item
Quarto. *4, [dagger]4, [Maltese cross]4, 2-3*4, a-k4, l4(-l4), m-2c4 2d2 2e-2z4 3a2 3b4 3c-3d2 (blank 3d2) (= 209 leaves). xxxvi, 380, [2, blank]pp. Fine, wide-margined, largely unopened copy in contemporary Italian rustica wrappers. Only edition of a scarce and obscure work. "A praelectio on the use of Oriental languages in rebus divinis [theology] opens the work, based on lectures held at Pavia University in 1751. Amply printed in 22p italics, with a beautiful 18p Hebrew in the notes, the work offers a traditional view of the subject. In the remaining part (p. 193ff.) dogmatical questions [concerning, i.a., purgatory and the cult of saints] are elaborated against notorious [!] Protestant scholars [Theodore Hackspan; Joseph Bingham; Isaac de Beausobre]. An Arabic quotation on p. 202 has been rendered in woodcutâ (Smitskamp). Jà cher (Adelung Supplement) 6:672, noting that Henricus à Porta (fl. 1758) was professor of oriental languages at Pavia in 1764, and made a reputation with Kennicott as a collator of Old Testament manuscripts. It is notable that Vinograd includes no listings for (early modern) Hebrew works published in the city of Milan; this is certainly a most uncommon example of Hebrew printing originating from that city.
