About the Author: French journalist, founder of royalist pamphlet 'Les Actes des Apôtres'; in 1792 fled to England where he published a series of attacks against the Republic, under the title of 'Tableau de Paris'. Between 1794 and 1802 published a journal, 'L'Ambigu', violently attacking Napoleon. For Peltier's prosecution at Middlesex Sessions 1803, see 'The trial of John Peltier, Esq. for a libel against Napoleon Bonaparte : First Consul of the French Republic, at the Court of King's-Bench, Middlesex, on Monday the 21st of February, 1803' (BL B.357.f.25 and 228.g.5); and also The National Archive, Kew, TS 11/429: Rex v Jean [Gabriel] PELTIER and v Joseph DE BOFFE for publishing a libel on Napoleon Bonaparte (inciting assassination): with copies of L'Ambigu nos 1, 3; he was found guilty, but not called up for judgement, i.e. the case was dropped.
