FIRST EDITION. 8vo, 195 x 104 mms., pp. [xvi], 144, 13 engraved plates at pages 19, 36, 44, 45, 57, 63,79, 83, 86, 96, 106, 115 (folding), and 123 (folding), title-page in red and black, bound in 18th century speckled sheepskin, spine ornately gilt in compartments, morocco label; front joint very slightly cracked,top and base of spine slightly worn, but a very good copy with the Macclesfield South Library on the front paste-down end-paper. plates at p 19, 36, 44, 45, 57, 63,79, 83, 86, 96, 106, 115f, 123f, The little information that I have found on Antoine de Saint Julien is that he flourished between 1690 and 1711 and that some 15 editions of this work were published. Several libraries do not correct the date of 1606 on the title-page; in this copy it has been correct with and additional "C" added after "D". The work is dedicated to Francois Charles Liebstenski, Comte de Colowrat. The work opens with an assertion of the necessity for humankind to be taught that machines for their defence are a necessity. OCLC locates several copies of this work in continental libraries, two in British libraries and three in North America: Metropolitan Museum of Art, West Point, Yale. Seller Inventory # 9846
