About this Item
1937. First edition. xi, 116pp., a frontispiece and many other black and white drawings by Cecily Englefield. Lorna Lewis (died 1962) was a British writer who published a number of popular children's books during the middle part of the 20th century. Her best known work is probably 'Leonardo the Inventor'. This book contains a collection of short stories about the animals in London Zoo. The stories had first appeared in the pages of the Sunday Express. It is illustrated with black and white drawings by Cecily Englefield (1893-1970), who wrote and illustrated a number of children's books and was an early pupil of the wood-engraver Noel Rooke. The book is bound in the original white paper covered boards with red titling and a small brown illustration on the front board. The spine of the book is missing and the spine is slightly cocked. The case of the book is otherwise in good to very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling and staining on the boards. The corners are lightly bumped with small pieces of the paper covering the boards missing from around the corner tips apart from the bottom front corner which is missing a slightly large piece. The contents are secure and clean with a small stain on pages viii and 1 and a few small marks elsewhere within the book. There is a handwritten school prize inscription dated July 1938 on the front free endpaper. Seller Inventory # gNet024
