Joseph Warren arrived in Allahabad in 1838 and is credited with beginning the missionary press there. William Bowley (c.1780-1843), pioneer evangelist and church planter in India, born in India to a British soldier and Indian mother. "Bowley was proud of his Indian heritage and language skills and would not tolerate racism in any form. Originally a fifer in the East India Company's army, he was a successful businessman when converted through the influence of Daniel Corrie. From 1814 to 1843, supported by the Church Missionary Society, he was a tireless street evangelist. He itinerated along the Ganges.and gave pastoral oversight of converts."
