About this Item
small 8vo. pp. vii, [1], 126, [1 leaf]. A nice copy in original blind-stamped cloth (covers slightly warped, tail of spine starting to fray, some light foxing). First Edition. Scarce. The author, a young Oxford graduate, settled on Sturgeon Lake near Peterborough (Verulam Township) in 1832, and played a significant role in development of the region. He was a member of the government commission which supervised the building of the first lock on the Trent water-way in 1833-34. There he founded the town of Bobcaygeon, and established "the hallmarks of any pioneer community" - a sawmill, gristmill and general store. His journal describes life in the larger towns as well as the backwoods, including impressions of Kingston, Toronto, Niagara, Brantford, the Talbot Settlement, Cobourg, Otonabee, and Peterborough. The manners and customs of First Nations, sporting excursions, sugar-making, and emigration are also discussed. Casey I 1692. Gagnon I 3327 (attributing the work to Susannah Moodie). Sabin 10607. Story p. 611. TPL 2195. Watters p. 555. DCB XII pp. 781-82. Seller Inventory # elala5858
