About this Item
Full leather binding with stamped black ruling on borders of front and rear, with stamped dividers on spine and stamped bright gilt on spine too. Page edges all around in bright gilt. Endpapers in patterned pink papers inside edge of boards have gilt ruling on border. Two volumes bound into one. Great frontis piece of author with some mild foxing. Despite age, size and heft (468 pp & 368 pp) the book is tight, square and amazingly free of markings or flaws (other some very mild foxing in the front and throughout). "The literary star known as "L.E.L.," pen name of the British poet, novelist, and critic Letitia Elizabeth Landon (1802-1838), rose to prominence around 1824. But after her death in 1838 in Africa, she was mostly forgotten, and her writing was mostly lost lost from public view until the last two decades. It is a tantalizing mystery, in many respects. Why, with her brief but impressive career, did Letitia Landon fade so quickly and utterly from the literary world? The story of L.E.L.'s life and work offers an object lesson in the power of cultural forces to create, and then destroy, an artistic reputation." [Francis J. Sypher]. Seller Inventory # blb01599
