About this Item
First UK Edition in First Issue dustwrapper. Octavo; publisher's black cloth, spine lettered in silver foil; publisher's logo blind-stamped to the back board. 320 pages; pictorial end-papers. Boards exceptionally bright and clean. A bookseller's ticket to the front paste-down. Faint outline of a pencil inscription (now erased) and a tiny hole to the half-title page. Overall VG indeed. The dustwrapper is price-clipped with chipping to the spine tips just affecting the lettering at the head of the spine and to the left hand corner of the front panel removing most of the MA of MARGERY. Mystery novel featuring the author's most popular creation, the criminologist Albert Campion] in a masterpiece of storytelling. Margery Allingham sends her elegant and engaging detective Albert Campion into the eccentric Palinode household, where there have been two suspicious deaths. And if poisoning were not enough, there are also anonymous letters, sudden violence and a vanishing coffin. Meanwhile, the Palinodes go about their nocturnal business and Campion dices with danger in his efforts to find the truth. More than a little wit, and a great deal of brilliance' (Kirkus). "The best of Margery Allingham s work, like More Work for the Undertaker and The Tiger in the Smoke, well repay reading. And, as I well know, re-reading and re-reading." (H R F Keating, Mystery Scene). Photographs/scans available upon request. Seller Inventory # 355490722263
