About this Item
Undated but 1920. First edition. viii, 301pp. Violet Rosa Markham (1872-1959) was a writer, social reformer, campaigner against women's suffrage and administrator. In 1915, she married Lieutenant-Colonel James Carruthers, but she continued to be known by her maiden name. She accompanied her husband to Cologne, when he was stationed there as chief demobilisation officer for the British Army of the Rhine, following the First World War. This is her account of her time in Cologne and elsewhere in Germany, with interesting accounts of the views of the Germans. Some of the material had previously appeared in the pages of the Westminster Gazette. The book is bound in the original light blue cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and black titling on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling and patches of damp fading on the boards. The spine is faded and there is also fading along the top 1 1/2" of the front board. The spine ends are lightly bumped. The contents are tight and clean with some foxing on the first few pages, including the half-title and title pages. There is also foxing on the fore edge of the text block and on some pages this has seeped a little way into the fore margin. There is no inscription. Seller Inventory # gGermany01
