First American Edition (SD). Up to the mid-1920s 'SD' (same date on title page and copyright page) is how a first edition was indicated with books published by Longmans, Green, And Company. This book was originally published in France in 1911. This American edition was translated from the Second French Edition. My copy is NOT ex-library. This copy may also be of particular interest to anybody out there who knows who Louise Marion Bosworth was. Her short Wikipedia profile reads 'Louise Marion Bosworth (July 11, 1881 to August 1982) was an American researcher at the Women's Educational and Industrial Union (WEIU) who extensively surveyed working women in order to learn about their working and living conditions. Bosworth helped to blaze the way for more women to do social science research that benefits the public interest.' She wrote a book that was published one year before this one. It was titled "The Living wage of women workers; a study of incomes and expenditures of 450 women in the city of Boston". It was prepared under the direction of the Department of Research, Women's Educational and Industrial Union; edited with an introduction by F. Spencer Baldwin. It was also published by Longmans, Green, And Company. Anyway, the relevance is that she owned this book. And she signed her name on the blank first front end paper ( 'Louise Marion Bosworth, Philadelphia, March 1912'). Across from that on the front inside cover she affixed her bookplate with her printed name on it. As far as I was able to establish, her signature cannot be found anywhere else on the Internet. In fact I was only able to find one original copy of her book for sale on the Internet. And it was not signed by her. This book is in quite decent shape. It's one flaw, the reason for the 'Minus' in the rating, is the two scuff marks on the front cover. Otherwise, the covers have held up quite well. The original label is in solid shape with just a little bit of rubbing. The corners have only speck-sized spots of rubbing. The edges are in excellent shape. The spine ends have some crinkling. The book is solidly bound from cover to cover. There's only one instance, between pages 64 and 65, where there is the very slightest space between facing pages. It looks like the book was simply left lying open there. Neither page is in the least bit loose or impaired in any way. All of the pages are in really nice condition. Pretty remarkable for a book published in 1912. But then again Ms. Bosworth lived to 101. Clearly these two things are related! Anyway, the pages are exceptionally clean and they don't seem to have any wear. There are no creases and no dogeared corners. There are no markings. The only attachment is the aforementioned bookplate. And the only writing to be found in the book is the aforementioned signature of Ms. Louise Marion Bosworth. Seller Inventory # 002366
