About this Item
[sharp-looking copy, with minimal wear to book, one-time owner's neatly-written ownership statment (dated Christmas 1927) on the verso of the frontispiece; the jacket is typically (but lightly) age-toned, with some minor wear at the spine ends and a number of tiny surface-scrape marks on the front panel, a couple of tiny chips at the bottom of the rear panel, and some judicious internal tape-reinforcement]. (color frontispiece, 12 b&w film stills) Subtitled "The Story of a Deathless Passion Based on the Motion Picture Story, Adapted by Bess Meredyth," this is a novelization (and thus a true first edition) of the 1927 Warner Bros. film of the same name, which is based on the venerable story of "Manon Lescout," first published as a novel ("Histoire du Chevalier des Grieux, et de Manon Lescaut") in 1731, filmed numerous times and adapted as the opera "Manon Lescout" by Puccini. The star-crossed lovers, the Chevalier des Grieux and Manon, were played respectively by then-about-to-be-husband-and-wife John Barrymore and Dolores Costello, thereby earning this book the distinction of being dubbed the "Special Barrymore-Dolores Costello Edition," and being given the extra acoutrements of a color frontispiece and twelve (rather than the more typical eight or four) bound-in stills from the film. Although a silent (as in dialogue-less) film, it was originally issued with a synchronized musical score with sound effects, the third feature Warner Bros. released using the Vitaphone system. Director Alan Crosland's next film to be released, just a couple of months after this one, was THE JAZZ SINGER. Seller Inventory # 28653
