About this Item
Evaleen Stein (1863?1923) was an American author of poetry and prose as well as a limner (a painter of the ornamental design in illumination of manuscripts). She was the author of eleven volumes of stories and three books of verse. In addition, she translated two volumes of poetry for publication; this one from the Japanese (When Fairies Were Friendly) and another from Italian. Thelma Gooch (1895-1973) was a prolific book illustrator who had 5 illustrations for this title. Unfortunately, only two illustrations are still attached and in this copy. This hardcover was retired from Colorado Springs public library. Hardcover has burgundy leather spine with burgundy cloth boards, but no DJ. Cloth worn through at corners and edge opposite spine. This copy was rebound into a library binding with gold lettering on spine including shelving as a juvenile book. Label on rear paste-down says rebinding by Dieter Bookbinding Co. in Denver. Foot of page edge has been wet with pp 44-106 page points melted away, text unaffected. Library envelope and date sheet still attached in front end papers. Gutters torn but repaired with heavy tape so binding is tight. 3 illustrations (including fontis) torn out and lost, no other page loss noted. Pages have stains and occasional unrepaired tears. No markings in book after title page noted. viii + 190pp + 5 plates. Copyright 1922. Printed in U.S.A. Stated 1st impression with print date in Mdccccxxii on front of title. True 1st edition thus. No CIP, ISBN, LCCN nor MSR. Seller Inventory # 008100
